Upcoming Pop-Up Show: October 16th!

Art News October 1st, 2010

Considered the art equivalent of music raves, “pop-up” art exhibits seek to bring artists and audiences together for fleeting runs, ranging from one night to several weeks. Since originating in London, England, “pop-up” art exhibitions have been popping up in American cities, such as New York, Washington DC and Chicago. 360 Degrees of Art is bringing the concept to Houston and will be hosting its second event in a year-long series of Pop-Up art shows at the Bubbles Car Wash on the trendy Washington Avenue (3522 Washington Avenue) on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010 from 6 to 9 p.m.

In line with our mission of community involvement, 360 Degrees of Art will be hosting its second “Pop-Up” art show with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters in honor of their 60th Anniversary. In addition to the gallery-quality art on display, 360 Degrees of Art has … Read more

Debut of Pop-Up Art Shows in Houston

Art News September 14th, 2010

Now that the debut of our pop-up art show at Saks Fifth Avenue in Houston is behind us (check out the pics on our events page: http://www.my360art.com/category/events/), we’ve spent the weekend reflecting on the show. Our primary goals were to promote a very talented group of local emerging artists to a diverse group of people, while benefiting the Children’s Assessment Center of Houston.

We also wanted to expose 360 degrees of art to the broader Houston public by introducing people to our pop-up concept and to discuss how pop-up art can ultimately benefit the Houston art scene. The purpose of 360’s pop-up art shows is to provide an opportunity for people to think outside the box, or in this case, outside the traditional four walls of an art gallery.

Since the pop-up concept is new to Houston, this was the perfect opportunity to begin educating artists and art enthusiasts … Read more

When in Fort Worth…

Houston Art Scene June 23rd, 2010

Go see western art!

Having spent yesterday at the Kimbell Art Museum, I decided to search out some art galleries. After surveying people at the hotel and local coffee shops, my choices came down to the Thomas Kinkade and the Sid Richardson Museum.

I am personally not a fan of Thomas Kinkade because I don’t like the subject matter, but more importantly because most of his paintings are produced in a paint-by-numbers factory in China, rather than by his own brush strokes! This left the Sid Richardson Museum, which I had never heard of before.

The Sid Richardson Museum is a collection of paintings depicting the American West. While I am no fan of this particular genre, I found the museum to be very interesting.

Sid Richardson was born in 1891 in Athens, Texas, and later become know as one of the most famous Texas oil tycoons. Over the course … Read more

Kimbell Art Museum… a must see!

Houston Art Scene June 21st, 2010

On a recent trip to Ft. Worth, Texas, I decided to take in the local art scene, which led me to the Kimbell Art Museum. While Kimbell has your expected headless Greek and Roman sculptures and token Egyptian and Ancient Near East works of art, it does manage to surprise even the most experienced museum-goers! Among the highlights on exhibit:

Gustave Courbet’s Portrait of H.J. van Wisselingh, 1846 (French)

  • Courbet’s work was heavily influenced by Rembrandt’s work, which I think is clearly demonstrated in this work.

Frederic Leighton’s, Portrait of May Sartoris, 1860 (British)

  • For those of you who are unfamiliar with Leighton, he was a leading artist in the British Aesthetic Movement and was president of the Royal Academy. This work depicts the daughter of famed opera singer and celebrated hostess Adelaide Sartoris.

Vincent van Gogh’s, Streets in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, 1888 (Dutch)

Minor victory against Christie’s

Art Markets, Art News May 26th, 2010

CNet-founder Halsey Minor has actually scored a win in one of his many current suits.  Christie’s must pay $8.57m in damages to Minor since they failed to return paintings he had consigned to them in a prompt manner and the price of the paintings fell during that time period.

Minor’s collection of contemporary art and design was recently sold off at Phillips de Pury as a way to pay back a defaulted loan.

Salander Can’t Repay Victims

Art Markets, Art News May 25th, 2010

At a hearing last Wednesday, a New York justice said it was unlikely that dealer Lawrence Salander would be able to repay the victims of his $120m fraud.  Prosecutors are calling the case the largest art fraud case in New York history and Salander faces up to 18 years in jail.
Salander pled guilty to 29 counts of grand larceny in March and admitted to defrauding collectors by collecting funds for fabricated art-investment schemes, double-selling shares in paintings, and selling art he did not own and keeping the proceeds.
For more detail, check out my story on the case and Christie’s upcoming sale of works from the Salander-O’Reilley Galleries at The Art Newspaper.

Blacklisting Suit not Successful

Art Markets, Art News May 24th, 2010

Craig Robins’ suit against David Zwirner has failed. The interesting part about this case isn’t the suit that was brought against Zwirner, it was all the sordid details of blacklisting in the art world that came out because of it.  As the judge said, “This lawsuit offers an unflattering portrait of the art world—a realm of self-proclaimed royalty full of ‘blacklists’, ‘graylists’ and astonishing chicanery.”

For a good summary of the case and verdict, check out Marisa Katz and Helen Stoilas’ piece at The Art Newspaper (they scooped it).

Impressionist & Modern Spring Sales

Art Markets, Art News May 10th, 2010

Well, it’s been an exciting week in the art world.  If you haven’t yet heard, Christie’s had a record breaking sale on May 4th with Picasso’s Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust from the Brody collection selling for a cool $106,482,500, making it the highest price paid for any work of art at auction.  Overall, the sale was strong, with Christie’s pulling in $335,548,000.

Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern sale wasn’t so shabby either – with 50 of 57 lots selling, it brought the auction house $195,697,001.  The highest price of the night was $28,642,5000 for Matisse’s Bouquet de Fleurs pour le Quatorze Juillet.  While this is a lot lower than the Picasso, it’s not so bad when you figure it was the third highest priced item from both sales, following Giacommeti’s Grande tête mince, which went for $53,282,500.

Things definitely seem stronger this spring than last and everyone in … Read more
